Harriet & David

David DYKES (s/o Nathaniel DYKES & Temperance JETER), b. 10 Mar 1815 in AL, d. 1 Mar 1900 in Natchitoches Pr., LA, bur. Beulah Methodist Church-Natchitoches Pr., LA, occupation logger. He married 7 Dec 1840 in Barbour Co., AL, Harriet Elizer McKINSEY (d/o Asa McKINSEY), b. 4 Apr 1819 in South Carolina, d. 2 Aug 1898 in Natchitoches Pr., LA, bur. Beulah Methodist Church-Natchitoches Pr., LA.

Travis Wright Durr told his daughter "In 1859, David Dykes with his wife Harriet McKinsey & seven children left Alabama in an ox wagon. They camped near New Orleans on their first night in LA. The next morning when they awoke, they found a man sleeping on the wagon tongue. He was rather well to do & had gotten too drunk to get home. A trade was made & the Dykes acquired some land near Allen, LA. They stayed there a year before moving to Bear (Berry?) Break. During the Civil War David Dykes made shoes for the CSA." Thomas F. Jennings in EARLY SETTLERS & LATER FAMILIES OF THE BETHANY-JENNINGS CHAPEL COMMUNITY, NATCHITOCHES, LA, states that they resided in Coffee & Barbour counties of AL before coming to LA. They first settled at Berry Brake in Ward 5 of Natchitoches Pr., LA. Information from T. L. Dykes, Jr. states "David Dykes logging crew consisted of his 7 McKinsey brothers-in-law who were considerd to be very rough & rowdy in those backwoods days. All seven of the McKinsey brothers died 'with their boots on' & their sister, Harriet, is known to have said that had she been a man she would have died with her boots on. She was a rather small woman, very fiesty, & she smoked a small clay pipe."
